WORLD CUP VIEWERS SAVOR GERMAN SPIRIT
Soccer and Sauerkraut Captivate U.S. Fans
Bear Creek, Wis.– If they can’t travel to Germany for the World Cup tournament, it seems
soccer fans across the United States are determined to celebrate the highlight of their favorite
sport in German style. Reports of World Cup celebrations with a distinctly German flavor are
springing up from Minneapolis to Miami, the televised matches often accompanied by a
smorgasbord of German beers, schnitzel, spaetzle, and Sauerkraut.
“If we can’t physically be in Munich or the other German cities hosting the cup, at least we can
be there in spirit,” said Ryan Downs, co-owner of the Great Lakes Kraut Company, the largest
manufacturer of Sauerkraut in the world. “The incredible popularity of the sport here and around
the world has inspired an atmosphere almost like Oktoberfest and, given Sauerkraut’s
reputation as a healthy food, pairing it with a healthy sport like soccer makes sense.”
Eating Sauerkraut and the cabbage it’s made from has recently been cited in medical research
as effective in reducing the risk for breast, prostate and colon cancer. According to a
Georgetown University study published in the British Journal of Cancer, a chemical that occurs
naturally in cruciferous vegetables like cabbage improves the body’s ability to repair damaged
DNA, reducing the risk of cancer development. The nutritional and chemical properties of
Sauerkraut have also proven effective in aiding digestion and lowering cholesterol levels.
Sausages and Sauerkraut are a menu favorite of soccer fans in Germany and the U.S., with
Nuremberg’s “sex mit kraut” – or six sausages with Sauerkraut – the most popular offering in
that World Cup host city’s dining establishments. The renowned Nuremberg bratwurst can be
difficult to come by in the states. However, Downs suggests “Savory Sausage and Kraut Skillet”
with cold Bavarian beer as the centerpiece for a German-styled World Cup party.
Savory Sausage and Kraut Skillet
Ingredients:
2 tbsp. butter
1 medium onion, chopped
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1 apple, peeled, cored and grated
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. caraway seeds
12 small red potatoes, cleaned
1 1/2 cups Krrrrisp Kraut Sauerkraut
1 lb. smoked beef sausage or kielbasa
Cut sausage into 3 inch pieces. Melt butter in skillet; add onion and green pepper and cook until
tender. Add apple, brown sugar, caraway seeds, potatoes, and Sauerkraut; mix well. Place
sausage on top of Sauerkraut mixture. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 30 minutes.
